Welcome to the Language of Connection.I hope these words connect with you. Are we losing sightof the important things? Too focused on getting to the next rung? The next level? The promotion, the raise, that good report, those extra hours? But what’s the trade-in? When we leave no time to enjoy the people and the things that we are hustling for. What priceless moments are we missing out on, to get ahead? From a very early age, all I saw was the sad faces and wistful hearts of those, to whom the possession belonged. Many times on the faces of those with so little, amidst the hardship, I saw joy-filled smiles and laughter . I knew enough not to try and make a home of happiness in certain places.
I think we generally tend to associate wealth with financial freedom and being "rich" with material possessions. But behind the veil, wealth is time and real riches are relationships. One we can’t get back, the other is what makes any of this, worth wanting to getting back. Working for "money" is not the only way to be granted access to financial freedom, but most would have us believe that it is. It is a common belief that we are required to give up our time, freedom, and humanity to access these luxuries. That is a fallacy. That’s what a rat race is. It’s a race to go nowhere. Is there an end game?
This is one of the major questions and dominant themes in this week's poem below, Rat Race. We know the most magnificent things don’t have a price, i.e. are price-less. Oh sure, we pay a pretty penny to have private accessibility, to what is free for all. A view to the ocean. A seat by the river. A peek at the mountain. Right on the other side of that fence; is the hiking trail that is free for the public. One view cost $5.95 in gas money and the other $12 million Dollars. This is the peculiar folly of human kind, often the perception of having it and the accessibility to it outweigh our desire to make use of it. Like having the best Jordan's on and you can't ball. Please don’t misinterpret this to mean that having the ambition to be wealthy or successful is a bad thing. That is not the intended message, not at all. On the contrary, it can be a big blessing to us and those in our lives to completely eliminate financial limitations. However, I would say that such goals ought be a means to an end, not the end. The reason the pot of gold always disappears at the end of the rainbow is because; if that’s all we were chasing to begin with, it will lead us right back to our own unresolved past. These words are for anyone who’s ever felt trapped in the Rat Race.
Rat Race
I see the city in
pretty lights,
from
wild heights,
without
the gold throne,
fitted caps
and all the ice,
And all the mice scurry for
the cheese, when there's
plenty of it, let a passion
ferment, then take
the bricks out the oven,
A pity when
many men pay
a pretty price for
petty gains,
that never seem to
last a heavy life,
Laughter enhances
the chance,
that we
take the time, appreciate our
temporary state,
with a
glass of wine,
I slow down time
because downtime
is not a crime,
This ain't advice,
I write to
convince myself,
when I'm dead,
what I have left?
Your respect?
Well, that's great,
but, Who are you?
Spending all this time,
impressing someone,
I never knew, like dudes
who drop first date money,
don't have a clue,
Like me, explaining
this verse to you,
if you don't get it,
you weren't meant to,
Take the time, study it,
all the answers are there for you,
without the cash spoils, Who is going to be there for you?
This ain't a barbershop, there ain't no shortcuts, I'm trying to paint a gazelle, you want a fast buck, Some will take
